President's Message

Greetings Sorors, Friends and Guests!

On behalf of the Wilberforce Alumnae Chapter (WAC) of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, it is my pleasure and privilege to welcome you to the Wilberforce Alumnae Chapter website and introduce you to the chapter.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated is an international service sorority founded on January 13, 1913, by 22 collegiate women at Howard University.  The founders envisioned a sorority dedicated to sisterhood, scholarship, service and social action.  The sorority's first public act was their participation in the Women's Suffrage March in Washington D.C. March 1913.  The sorority has grown to over 350,000 initiated members and over 1,050 chartered chapters worldwide.

The Wilberforce Alumnae Chapter was organized in 1922, by a group of women graduates and staff from Wilberforce University and various other universities.  The original name of the chapter was Delta Sigma.  In 1954, the chapter's name was changed to Wilberforce Alumnae at the 23rd National Convention.  Wilberforce Alumnae Chapter is committed to aligning their programming with the national Five Point Programmatic Thrust:  economic development, educational development, international awareness and involvement, physical and mental health, and political awareness and involvement.

The Wilberforce Alumnae Chapter has provided over $500,000 in scholarships to help area students further their education.  The chapter has helped over 50 families in Greene, Clark, and Montgomery counties through the Share Adopt-A-Family program.  The chapter has organized health education programs for adults and youth programs to foster self-esteem and encourage reading improvement.   The main funding for our outreach programs and projects are from our signature events: Dazzling Diva Day, Delta D.E.A.R High Tea, and the sales of Christmas cards and gifts.

Our past International President, Soror Elsie Cooke-Holmes, reminds us that "we must stay cohesive in our approach to engage, empower, and elevate our communities."  In times like these, we must do so with renewed energy to support, provide, educate, and strategize priorities together to go to the next level and beyond.

Peace and Blessings,

Rev. Peggy G. Turner, D. Min.
